I’m A Beauty Writer With Oily Skin, Here’s How I “Office-Proof” My Face

As a city girl, I always felt my skin was tough enough to endure the urban chaos—Tube grime, smog, and sealed windows that left no room for fresh air. However, after transitioning from university life to a conventional office job with early starts, I quickly discovered that my skincare routine was not equipped for this new reality. In no time, I found myself battling uncomfortable closed comedones and parched skin—a shocking problem for someone with naturally oily skin. It became clear that I needed to reassess how I was caring for my skin to address this office-induced stress.

Dr. Alexis Granite, a dermatologist and founder of Joonbyrd, explains that modern office environments can have various adverse effects on our skin. For instance, prolonged exposure to air conditioning and heating diminishes moisture levels, leading to skin dehydration and a weakened barrier. Moreover, indoor air pollutants—ranging from carpets and paint to office supplies—can worsen skin irritation and inflammation. Fresh outdoor air plays a crucial role in diluting these harmful elements and enhancing our overall well-being. Fortunately, well-maintained air filtration systems can also help, but it’s essential to be proactive in seeking out clean air.

Artificial lighting presents another challenge. Dr. Granite points out that constant exposure to fluorescents can lead to oxidative stress and pigmentation issues over time. For individuals with sensitive skin, this type of lighting might exacerbate conditions like rosacea and melasma. Additionally, exposure to artificial light can decrease our skin’s hydration and disrupt our circadian rhythms, ultimately impeding the skin’s natural repair processes. Counterintuitively, working in high-rise buildings can also expose us to UV rays, especially if we sit close to windows. This duality enhances the importance of using daily SPF and antioxidant-rich products to combat skin damage.

To “office-proof” my skin, I first streamlined my skincare regimen. I transitioned from heavier products to lighter cleansing balms and gentle moisturizers. This shift significantly reduced congestion and unclogged pores, paving the way for healthier skin by the end of the workweek. In addition to product adjustments, I made a concerted effort to step outside and breathe in some fresh air whenever possible. Not only does this help clear my head, but it also dilutes any pollutants that might have settled on my skin throughout the day.

Making these adjustments has changed my perspective on skincare. It’s no longer just about aesthetics; it’s also about creating a protective barrier against environmental stressors. Integrating a routine that features nutritious products and prioritizes fresh air has not only improved my skin but has made me feel more vibrant and revitalized.

Ultimately, living and working in a bustling city can pose unique challenges to our skin, but understanding these challenges allows us to adapt while taking charge of our skincare. By being proactive and attentive to our routines, we can find the balance necessary to maintain glowing, healthy skin, regardless of the environment we find ourselves in. It’s all about listening to what our skin needs and responding to it, transforming it into a resilient ally in this urban landscape.
