5 Effective Tweaks To Make To Your Summer Skincare Routine, According To A Skin Expert

As summer rolls in, a host of skincare concerns often crowd my mind: Which cap should I toss in my bag to ward off sun damage? Am I drinking enough water to stay hydrated? And why is my skin acting up? While the warmer, sunnier days tend to ease my eczema and reduce my skin’s overall reactivity, the relentless heat, sweaty jogs, and the layers of sunscreen I apply diligently often lead to frustrating breakouts and a rough texture I just can’t tackle. Curious for expert advice, I turned to Dr. Raj Arora, a known GP and founder of The Face Bible, to grasp how to maintain healthy skin amidst this seasonal surge in temperature.

Dr. Arora points out that increased sun exposure during the summer highlights the necessity of sun protection, as it can elevate the risks of sunburn and skin damage. Prolonged exposure often leads to premature aging and pigmentation issues, which reveal themselves in the long run. Moreover, the summer heat tends to ramp up oil production in the skin, making acne and other skin conditions more pronounced. If you’ve recently noticed your skin reacting more violently than usual, it’s not just in your head—many of us are grappling with similar issues.

In addition to breakouts, Dr. Arora underlines that many people experience dryness during the summer months, even with all the sweating. Excessive sweating depletes the skin’s moisture levels, resulting in dryness and irritation. Interestingly, regular sunscreen use, while crucial for protection, can sometimes clog pores for some individuals. This makes selecting the right sunscreen even more imperative, as it plays a vital role in how our skin copes with the heat.

Curious about the most common skin woes she encounters in her clinic during the sweltering summer months, I sought her expert recommendations for managing skin care effectively. Dr. Arora provides five essential tips for summer skincare. First up, she stresses the importance of revising your cleansing routine. The heat prompts our skin to sweat and produce more oil. This combination, when mixed with makeup and grime, can easily lead to breakouts. Double cleansing with a gentle, effective method—like starting with micellar water followed by a silicone-based cleanser—ensures not a smidge of dirt remains.

Secondly, while retinol remains a favorite in many skincare regimens due to its ability to enhance texture and tone, Dr. Arora cautions against overuse during the summer. Retinol can heighten the skin’s sensitivity to sunlight and irritation, leading to potential pigmentation issues. She often advises clients to scale back on retinol or opt for milder formulations during the hotter months, along with the non-negotiable use of sunscreen to fend off damage.

Dr. Arora’s third piece of advice emphasizes the importance of gentle exfoliation. Think of your skin as a multi-layered dessert, absorbing heat and sweat while accumulating dead skin cells. Regular, gentle exfoliation can help keep skin clear by removing these cells and preventing breakouts, though she warns that over-exfoliation can irritate the skin, especially for those with sensitive types.

Fourth on Dr. Arora’s list is the significance of regular hydration. The scorching heat calls for lightweight moisturizers and gels—products infused with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid can retain moisture without the heaviness that most of us dread in the warmer months. Finally, she emphasizes the critical necessity of choosing the right SPF. With so many options tailored to specific skin needs, it’s essential to look for broad-spectrum protection to safeguard against harmful UVA and UVB rays.

In summary, summer skin care requires a thoughtful approach to address unique challenges. From re-evaluating cleansing routines to judiciously applying active ingredients, maintaining hydration, and selecting suitable sun protection, a little diligence can go a long way. As we dive into the summer season, understanding these tenets of skincare can help ensure our skin remains radiant and healthy, allowing us to enjoy the sunshine without worry.
