Yeri Mua, the dynamo from Veracruz, Mexico, is not just making waves; she’s creating a tsunami in the world of social media and music. With her debut single in 2023, she has established herself as a formidable force in the vibrant reggaeton Mexa scene. Her track “Línea del Perreo” skyrocketed her to the top of TikTok, making her the number one artist on the platform last year. Her ambitions, fueled by a desire for global recognition, are evident in her recent U.S. and Latin American tour promoting her album, “De Chava.” The journey from TikTok sensation to aspiring pop star is one that many are watching eagerly.

Born Yeri Cruz Varela, this 23-year-old beauty influencer harnessed her creativity from a young age. After enrolling in cosmetology courses at just 15, she embraced the moniker “Mua,” short for makeup artist. Her early days were filled with makeup tutorials on Facebook, evolving into candid “Get Ready With Me” sessions on Instagram and TikTok. Through these platforms, Mua unabashedly discussed everything from beauty trends to personal experiences, even detailing her interactions with the infamous “chacales,” or bad boys. It was her appearance in the song “Chupón” by El Gudi, Jey F, Alan Dazmel, and Oviña that sparked her musical aspirations, showcasing her fierce persona reminiscent of Y2K aesthetics and Bratz dolls.

The emergence of reggaeton in Mexico has carved out a new cultural niche, now known as reggaeton Mexa. This genre has seen a surge in popularity, and Mua stands at the forefront, becoming one of its leading female figures in a predominantly male-dominated landscape. Her catchy tracks, “Brattiputy” and “Línea del Perreo,” have collectively amassed over 295 million streams on Spotify, a testament to her growing appeal. With her album “De Chava,” which translates to “Girly,” Mua channels her experiences and challenges into her music, delivering playful yet powerful messages in songs like “Traka” and “Él No Es Tuyo,” the latter marking a reconciliation with fellow artist Bellakath.

In a casual moment at her home in Veracruz, Mua takes a break from her trademark bold makeup and colorful wigs. Sporting her natural red hair and an Ice Spice shirt, she comfortably reflects on her ascent as a Mexican superstar. It’s clear that her journey is more than just about fame; it’s about expressing her identity and connecting with listeners on a personal level. Through her music, she addresses her critics and embraces her femininity while forging her path in a competitive industry that often overlooks women.

As Mua navigates the complexities of her new career, she also represents a shift in the landscape of reggaeton. She embodies a fresh narrative that challenges traditional norms and celebrates femininity. Her ability to infuse personal stories and playful energy into her music resonates not just with her audience but also paves the way for other female artists in the genre. This combination of authenticity and creativity is what sets Mua apart, allowing her to carve out her niche in the music industry.

In short, Yeri Mua is not merely participating in the reggaeton Mexa movement; she is shaping it. Her journey, influenced by her experiences as a beauty influencer and her bold artistic endeavors, speaks to a generation looking for genuine voices in music. With each track, she not only entertains but also empowers, making her an emblem of hope and inspiration for aspiring artists everywhere. It’s clear that this is just the beginning for Mua, and her future is undeniably bright as she continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
