Rare Beauty’s New Perfume Is the Modern Take on Gourmand We Needed

Smelling Rare Eau de Parfum is an experience akin to witnessing the grandeur of the Mona Lisa for the first time. Just as art enthusiasts find varying interpretations of the iconic painting, the Team Allure had mixed reactions when they received a sample of Rare Eau de Parfum, a new fragrance by Selena Gomez. Some were reminded of delightful moments—like the aroma of cookies in their grandmother’s kitchen—while others noted effervescent champagne-like qualities or brought attention to its powdery undertones. These diverse impressions resulted in an engaging debate among colleagues, ultimately leading to a unified conclusion: this fragrance had moved them so profoundly that they awarded it their One to Watch seal prior to its official launch on August 7.

Rare Eau de Parfum marks a distinct departure from Gomez’s earlier fragrance offerings, breaking free from the floral and fruity conventions established by previous scents like Find Comfort and the original fragrance from 2012. Instead, this creation boldly presents an array of gourmand notes—caramel, pistachio, cocoa, vanilla, and tonka beans—alongside a medley of spice and warmth, featuring pink pepper and ginger, complemented by softer facets of sandalwood and musk. Gomez’s intent was clear; she aimed to craft a scent that felt both comforting and surprising. “I love the balance of sweet and spicy, and the ginger gives it a little edge too,” she explained.

The uniqueness of Rare Eau de Parfum is underscored by its intention to redefine traditional scent profiles. Perfumery expert Jérôme Epinette, who collaborated with Gomez, expressed a vision of modernized vanilla, achieving a warm scent that’s nostalgic without being overpoweringly sweet. “It’s a scent that feels personal but could work for anyone, anytime,” he stated, suggesting the versatility inherent in this fragrance. This approach aligns with contemporary preferences, as it allows individuals to express themselves without conforming to typical scent expectations.

In addition to the fragrance itself, the bottle of Rare Eau de Parfum was designed with accessibility in mind. Selena Gomez shared insights into her personal struggles with lupus, which, paired with a medication’s side effects, had made her hands shake. Consequently, the design team prioritized creating an easy-to-hold, user-friendly bottle that anyone could spray comfortably. The extensive testing, which included consulting hand therapists, was aimed at ensuring that functionality never took a backseat to aesthetics.

Reflecting on personal experience, beauty writer Jesa Marie Calaor shared her hesitations as a self-proclaimed gourmand-hater. Having grown up during a time when overly sweet scents dominated the market, she was wary of another cloying fragrance. However, her first encounter with Rare Eau de Parfum proved to be a delightful surprise. While it contains multiple sweet notes, the balance of ginger and pink pepper offsets the sweetness, making for a complexity that is both comforting and intriguing. The scent evolves beautifully, transitioning from a heavier sweetness to a softer musk, ultimately feeling personal and unique.

In essence, Rare Eau de Parfum encapsulates a journey of sensory exploration. It combines unexpected elements in a harmonious manner, inviting wearers to experience both nostalgia and modernity. As a representation of Selena Gomez’s artistic vision, the fragrance challenges preconceived notions of what a gourmand scent can be while ensuring accessibility and comfort in use. As the fragrance prepares for its official debut, it promises to resonate with a diverse audience, much like the myriad interpretations that accompany a timeless masterpiece.
