Is There a “Right” Order for Applying Your Makeup Products?

Journey Through Makeup: From Chaos to Craft

If I had to sum up my very first experience with makeup in a single word, it would undoubtedly be "raccoon." Back in those middle school days, my application technique was, to put it mildly, lacking. Awash in far too much eyeliner and mascara, I looked less like a glamorous version of myself and more like I had taken a tumble into a smoky eye disaster. However, as the years rolled on, I took it upon myself to refine my methods. YouTube became my best friend, especially channels from makeup artists like Jackie Aina and MakeupShayla, who guided me with tips and techniques. They opened my eyes to the art of makeup, though I still struggled with one core mystery: the ideal order in which to layer my products. My makeup routine was less of a formula and more of a free-spirited expression—an approach that London-based makeup artist Celia Burton has wholeheartedly endorsed.

In a world filled with beauty guidelines that can sometimes feel rigid and prescriptive, Burton’s view resonates deeply. According to her, the sequence in which you apply makeup should be as fluid as your creativity allows. This liberating philosophy encourages experimentation, making each application a unique experience rather than a strict checklist. Of course, for those who prefer a bit of structure, there are notable artists like Lisa Eldridge and Charlotte Tilbury’s Tim Pagan. They offer valuable insights and tips that aim to enhance the seamlessness and longevity of your makeup. Such guidance is invaluable, especially for someone like me, who strives to strike a balance between spontaneity and polished results.

Despite the overwhelming options and advice out there, it all boils down to personal preference and the look you want to achieve. Special occasions, like my wedding day, demanded a bit more thought and planning. When I got married, I envisioned a radiant look that would capture attention and last well into the evening. My instincts told me that simply going with "vibes" wouldn’t cut it this time. Kay Jones, a makeup artist whose expertise I’ve admired, worked with me to execute that vision, employing techniques that transcended the basics I had learned from YouTube.

Making informed choices about your makeup routine can transform the way you feel and present yourself on important days. The key is to consider your skin type, the event, and personal preferences, allowing your unique style to shine through while ensuring your look stands the test of time. Like an artist with a palette, makeup becomes a medium through which you express your identity. Layering techniques can vary based on your desired outcome—whether that means highlighting certain features or creating an overall glow.

Moreover, experimenting with different products can lead to delightful discoveries. From creamy foundations that offer a dewy finish to matte lipsticks that withstand a bustling day, each product plays a vital role in crafting your look. The world of makeup is expansive, inviting us to explore different textures, colors, and techniques. It’s a realm where the only limit is your creativity and willingness to try new combinations.

Ultimately, the journey through makeup is not just about the end result but also about the evolution of self-expression and confidence. I may have started my journey looking like a raccoon, but the lessons learned along the way have transformed my makeup routine into a form of art. Each application tells a story, one that combines experience, advice from experts, and, most importantly, my own growing understanding of beauty. Embracing the process and enjoying the delightful chaos of makeup has made all the difference.
