Is Tattoo Blush The Next Big Beauty Trend?

Grace Clarke, a marketing consultant and former editor at Allure, embodies a spirit of exploration and trendsetting among her friends, often being the first to sample new experiences. Recently, she shared a TikTok video showcasing her decision to have her blush semi-permanently tattooed at Velvet Cosmetic Tattoos in Brooklyn. What she thought would be a casual update quickly spiraled into a virulent discussion online, garnering over a million views and sparking intense reactions. Many commenters deemed the tattoo blush treatment—lasting around 90 minutes and costing approximately $400—as “insane,” which Clarke found surprising. At the end of her video, her cheeks bore an intense pink reminiscent of Cabbage Patch Kids, leading to the mixed reactions. Nevertheless, Savannah Messenger, the tattoo artist behind the treatment, clarified that the brightness was largely due to an immediate skin reaction rather than the final color.

Cosmetic tattoos differ significantly from traditional tattoos, which invokes images of dramatic inked designs like Travis Barker. Messenger explains this distinction: whereas traditional tattoos involve pushing color deep into the skin, cosmetic tattoos utilize a softer technique, focusing on applying color to the upper skin layers for a watercolor-like effect. It’s a meticulous process where the pressure is light, ensuring no harsh lines are formed. Achieving the desired pigment typically necessitates multiple sessions, including a follow-up touch-up, and clients must navigate a healing period where the initial results may not be visually appealing. Messenger points out that this treatment is best suited for lighter skin tones (those falling into Fitzpatrick scale categories 1 to 4) and has specific contra-indications, such as skin conditions like rosacea or eczema.

Reflecting on the unexpected virality of her video, Clarke admits she was bewildered by the attention since she had previously posted about her tattoo treatment, this time being a follow-up appointment. “That’s the cost of posting online,” she muses, embracing her openness about her life on social media. Her journey was smooth, starting with a pre-treatment consultation where she shared mood boards and her favorite blush products, like ILIA Multi-Stick Cream Blush and Rare Beauty’s Soft Pinch Liquid Blush. Savannah responded by crafting a custom color for Clarke and mapping the application area, describing the process as minimally painful—a sentiment Clarke echoed by joking that she had experienced more discomfort during facial extractions.

As beauty standards evolve, so do the trends, with various blush styles coming and going throughout 2024, including “boyfriend blush” and the “sunset blush” look. Yet, for Clarke, this choice wasn’t about following fleeting beauty trends. She maintains that her approach to beauty isn’t driven by what’s in vogue; instead, she aims to enhance her natural appearance. “I’ve never been trend-driven in my approach to beauty,” she asserts, emphasizing the importance of practicality over faddishness. In Messenger’s experience, cheek tint tattoos are gaining further popularity, positioning them as an emerging trend in the cosmetic tattoo world, particularly among her clientele who typically seek lip-tinting procedures.

For Clarke, the underlying motivation for opting for tattooed blush is about simplifying her daily routine. “A big luxury to me is the freedom of space and time in my life,” she shares candidly. This subtle yet transformative beauty treatment allows her to streamline her makeup regimen, affording her the luxury of what she describes as “high-maintenance to be low-maintenance.” She is keenly aware of how such treatments facilitate her day-to-day life, enabling her to prioritize what truly matters without the weight of an elaborate beauty routine.

By Day 6 post-treatment, Clarke’s cheeks had nicely healed, showcasing a refined blush that became an integral part of her daily makeup routine. The initial shock and debate surrounding her TikTok reveal didn’t deter her; instead, it amplified her message about enhancing beauty through thoughtful enhancements rather than succumbing to fleeting fads. As more clients lean into similar treatments, Clarke’s story stands as a testament to embracing individuality and practicality in beauty, championing personalized options that ultimately reflect one’s unique essence rather than strict adherence to social media trends.
