Benefit Cosmetics Just Dropped a Cream Version of Its Iconic Hoola Bronzer

Reflecting on my early years in New York City during the vibrant 2000s, I can’t help but recall the beauty sanctuaries that defined my experience. Kiehl’s Apothecary on 2nd Avenue was a sensory delight, filled with jars of lip balm and an array of enticing free samples. The Bumble & Bumble salon stood as a beacon of creativity, where models, chic It-girls, and spirited Knicks dancers transformed their looks. Beauty Bar on 14th Street became a lively backdrop for late-night escapades, and everywhere I turned, the ubiquitous Benefit Cosmetics Hoola Bronzer sat prominently in the makeup bags of women I encountered. They exuded a cool confidence that left me in awe, and I often felt an overwhelming curiosity about their beauty routines and insights into life.

Launched in 2001, Benefit’s Hoola Bronzer quickly became revolutionary—a product that has brilliantly stood the test of time and remains a staple in the beauty world. It was one of the first bronzing powders to embrace a neutral tone without any shimmer. The stunning packaging, the flawless formula, and the universally flattering color have remained unchanged through the years, embodying the mantra of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Yet, in a timely effort to keep up with evolving beauty trends, Benefit recently introduced a new variation—the Hoola Wave Bronzing Balm. Just in time for summer, this cream version promises to expand the Hoola legacy while staying true to its origins.

The Hoola Wave Bronzing Balm, priced at $36, is crafted to provide a matte, velvety finish that can be built up for desired intensity. The innovative formula pays homage to the original bronzer while catering to those who favor creams over powders. After initial swatches, the Allure team was so impressed that they endeavored to test it further, ultimately recognizing it as a “One to Watch” product. This accolade is a testament to its quality and potential impact on the beauty landscape as a modern adaptation of a classic favorite.

Behind this innovation are talented experts who helped shape the Hoola Wave. Kate Helfrich, head of product development at Benefit, has emphasized the difference between their new balm and traditional cream bronzers. Traditional products often carry a heavier texture that can be challenging to blend. Therefore, the team aimed to create a lighter, more buildable bronzing balm, infused with skin-loving ingredients to enhance the application experience. “It’s always been about easy bronzing that you can’t mess up,” Helfrich explained, indicating that ease of use remains central to Hoola’s identity.

Hoola Wave capitalizes on the original’s signature shimmer-free finish, maintaining a silky texture and flattering shades. However, a critical factor behind the new formulation is its commitment to replicating the original’s feel in a creamy form. Notably, Benefit highlights beneficial ingredients like jojoba seed oil, shea butter, and avocado oil, promoting skin health alongside beauty. Makeup artist Vincent Oquendo noted that the balm feels surprisingly velvety—almost like a powder—making it a unique addition to the bronzing category that blends effortlessly with the skin.

In a world where beauty products come and go, the introduction of Hoola Wave Bronzing Balm serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between honoring tradition and embracing innovation. It’s not just about creating a new formula; it’s about preserving what made the original Hoola bronzer beloved while delivering something fresh. As I reflect on the beauty moments that shaped my adolescence, I can’t help but feel nostalgic about how products like Hoola have played a part in my journey. With its seamless adaptability and commitment to quality, Hoola Wave promises to keep that legacy alive for both new users and longtime fans alike. It’s exciting to witness such a historic brand grow, ensuring that the art of bronzing remains accessible, effortless, and ever-evolving in the ever-bustling beauty landscape of today.
