Hailey Bieber’s beauty brand, Rhode, is finally making its retail debut. After much speculation and anticipation, Rhode is set to land in all Sephora stores across the U.S. and Canada this Thursday. Launched in 2022, Rhode has quickly disrupted the beauty industry with its carefully curated line of skincare essentials. As Priya Venkatesh, Sephora’s global chief merchandising officer, highlighted, the brand has not only sparked tremendous consumer interest but also paved the way for pivotal shifts in beauty culture. This collaboration marks Sephora’s largest launch to date in North America, with exciting prospects for broader global reach.

The partnership between Rhode and Sephora is expected to benefit both parties significantly. Remarkably, Rhode achieved $212 million in net sales over the 12 months leading up to March 31, all without any retail partnerships. One source articulated that though demand will increase, it might attract a new customer base into Sephora, echoing the notion that “a rising tide lifts all boats.” Despite having ceded market share to behemoths like Amazon, both Sephora and Ulta Beauty could see revitalization through this partnership. Drawing parallels to past rise-through-the-ranks stories of brands like Summer Fridays and Drunk Elephant, it’s hoped that Rhode might be the next big breakout success.

However, some analysts express concern that the brand’s popularity may cannibalize other up-and-coming or established brands in both skincare and makeup. With Rhode’s initial focus on lip and blush products gaining traction, the makeup sector could bear the brunt of this shift before skincare feels the impact. Notably, prestige skincare has already shown signs of decline, with a 1 percent dip in the first half of the year, whereas makeup has only slightly increased by the same percentage. With consumer shopping drastically shifting towards platforms like Amazon, the challenge for Sephora becomes clearer.

The overarching sentiment remains that while Rhode’s entry could disrupt existing dynamics, it provides an opportunity for all players involved. If Rhode succeeds in drawing more shoppers into Sephora, it will set a benchmark for future brand launches in the retail space.
