What Happens When a Playwright’s Perfume Addiction Goes Too Far?

Charlotte Ercoli’s latest film, Fior di Latte, opens with a moment many can relate to: the chaos of a cluttered apartment anchored by an unpacked suitcase. The story centers on Mark Van Bloom, a New York City playwright portrayed by Tim Heidecker, who remains haunted by the captivating memories of his recent trip to Italy. This sentiment becomes a recurring motif throughout the film as Van Bloom resorts to increasingly desperate measures, all tied to a spilled Italian perfume in his suitcase. The fragrance, aptly named "Fior di Latte," becomes a symbol of his longing, sparking a journey centered around creativity and addiction.

As the plot unfolds, Van Bloom discovers that the scent of the spilled perfume somehow unlocks his creative potential, propelling him into frantic attempts to recreate the euphoria of Florence. Amid deadlines looming and inspiration waning, his escapades escalate. He pairs the huffing of the perfume with Italian tunes, engages an aspiring actress, played by Julia Fox, to speak to him in an Italian accent, and indulges in his beloved Italian sweet bread, pandoro. This parallel between the perfume and Van Bloom’s struggles touches upon deeper themes of obsession and the search for artistic inspiration, drawing viewers into a heartfelt yet humorous exploration of the creative process.

Director Charlotte Ercoli infuses her personal narrative into the film, drawing on her Italian-American roots and experiences. With nods to her upbringing, she reflects on how her family, particularly her mother and aunt, shaped her affinity for scents and storytelling. Ercoli’s journey to create Fior di Latte began with an ambitious pitch to fragrance brand D.S. & Durga, which ultimately inspired her to expand the concept into a full-length film. Her story highlights the significance of perfume in her life, having spent her childhood enveloped in fragrances and their emotional connections.

Central to the film’s narrative is Van Bloom’s journey, inspired by Ercoli’s own transformative trip to Italy at the age of 14. She recalls the thrill of embarking on that solo adventure, navigating a vibrant world filled with relatives, disco nights, and youthful romance. In capturing this essence, she wanted to portray a protagonist who undergoes a similarly life-altering experience abroad, yet struggles upon returning to the isolation of city life. This tension between the memory of freedom and the reality of mundane existence encapsulates a universal theme of longing.

The film features a diverse cast that blends seasoned actors with fresh talents, fostering a sense of community and collaboration. Ercoli emphasizes the chemistry among her cast, revealing her delight in weaving together various talents into a cohesive narrative. This blend reflects her artistic vision, where experienced actors can mentor newcomers, creating a rich tapestry of interwoven relationships on screen that echoes the film’s thematic core of connection and shared experience.

As part of the promotional efforts for Fior di Latte, the Italian fragrance brand I Profumi di Firenze is set to release a limited-edition perfume that mirrors the one in the film. Set to hit shelves in June with a price tag of $150 for a 50-ml bottle, the fragrance captures the essence of the film with delightful notes of vanilla, orris root, and honeysuckle. Amid the excitement surrounding the film’s premiere at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival, Ercoli expresses her anticipation for the audience’s reactions, particularly the moments of laughter that resonate with the film’s comedic elements, imbuing her artistic endeavor with personal significance and the hope of connection through shared experiences.
