Timothy Han Returns With Imprint, a Fragrance Collection Inspired by Cult Classic Books

In the vibrant heart of London, perfumer Timothy Han is inviting us to explore the sensory world of literature through his latest collection of fragrances titled “Imprint.” Drawing inspiration from influential literary works of the past 150 years, Han masterfully blends the essence of stories into scents, creating perfumes that encapsulate the “mood” of their respective books. Each fragrance comes elegantly packaged in boxes that mimic paperback books, adorned with unique artwork, making them collectible items that can be displayed like literary treasures on a shelf.

Han describes his venture as a “perfume publishing house,” likening the experience of wearing one of his scents to unfolding pages in a novel. The debut collection includes six carefully curated fragrances, each named after a literary title: “Against Nature” by Joris-Karl Huysmans, “She Came to Stay” by Simone de Beauvoir, “On the Road” by Jack Kerouac, “The Decay of the Angel” by Yukio Mishima, “Nadja” by André Breton, and “Heart of Darkness” by Joseph Conrad. The fragrances will be debuted at Dover Street Market Paris later in October, with preorders set to launch on the website soon, priced at £164 for a 50ml bottle.

Notably, Han is not a formally trained perfumer; his background is in architecture. Nonetheless, his unique approach to scent defies traditional norms. He collaborates with experienced noses to craft unusual fragrances that evoke strong emotional responses. He thrives on creating scents that are unsettling and polarizing, viewing these qualities as artistic expression. Han approaches scent as a mood rather than a structured hierarchy of notes, enabling him to capture complex feelings in his creations.

Each fragrance in “Imprint” has its own identity inspired by the thematic essence of its corresponding book. For instance, “On the Road” captures the spirit of an American road trip, infused with the aromas of burnt rubber, jazz, and summer fields, evoking memories of adventure and freedom. In contrast, “She Came to Stay” has a domestic quality, featuring lively notes of basil, lemon, and unexpected hints of clove and oak moss. The delicate balance of these intersections illustrates Han’s keen understanding of both literature and scent.

Delving deeper into the artistic expressions within the collection, “The Decay of the Angel” reflects themes of birth, death, and rebirth, incorporating olfactory nuances of sex, sweat, and floral intensity. Interestingly, what may sound dark in theory translates to a fragrance reminiscent of fresh flowers, inviting a sense of rejuvenation. “Against Nature” represents Huysmans’ obsession with artificial aesthetics, blending synthetic and natural elements. Meanwhile, “Heart of Darkness” immerses the wearer in the rich scents of damp earth, embodying the lush yet eerie atmospheres of Conrad’s narrative.

Looking ahead, Han aims to expand his olfactory library beyond mere fragrances. His vision includes building a cultural platform that merges literature and scent, featuring a book club, collaborations with writers and artists, and engaging “activations.” He envisions his forthcoming website as a dynamic space—part magazine, part library—where readers can explore essays, interviews, and thoughtful reflections on the intricate relationship between scent and storytelling. In this way, Han seeks to foster a deeper appreciation for how literature and fragrance can intertwine, inviting us to experience stories in a wholly new dimension.
