Lush Shuts All U.K. Stores for One Day, Voices Support for Gaza

In a bold move to stand in solidarity with the people of Gaza, British cosmetics brand Lush has decided to shut down all of its brick-and-mortar locations, online operations, and factories across the U.K. for a full day. The company’s call to action highlights the dire situation faced by millions affected by starvation and conflict in the region. By halting its business activities, Lush aims to raise awareness among its customer base and the wider public, indicating that they resonate deeply with the anguish that many people feel as disturbing images surface from Gaza.

In a statement posted on their website, Lush expressed a shared sense of helplessness, stating, “We share the anguish that millions of people feel seeing the images of starving people in Gaza, Palestine.” With this act, Lush hopes to amplify their voice in advocating for change and humanitarian aid, and they aim for the Government of the U.K. to take more decisive action toward alleviating the suffering in Gaza. The company has taken this stance not only as a show of compassion but also as a means to urge governmental accountability regarding arms sales that have implications for civilian safety.

All their U.K. stores showcased solidarity messages on their front windows, uniting employees and customers under a common purpose. By taking the significant step of losing a day’s sales, Lush also inadvertently sends a strong message to the government regarding tax contributions. The brand emphasized that its closure is meant to galvanize public discourse and encourage those in power to reconsider their stances on arms sales to conflict zones like Gaza. They stress that immediate action is needed to prevent further suffering and destruction.

Lush did extend an apology for any inconvenience caused due to this closure, recognizing the potential frustration of their customers. Acknowledging that many of their patrons share their anxiety over the ongoing crisis, the brand made it clear that their commitment to social and humanitarian issues is a core part of their identity. They showcased their long-standing dedication to fundraising efforts with their popular Watermelon Slice soap, which has seen remarkable success, raising necessary funds for mental health support for children in Palestine.

Moreover, Lush plans to reintroduce this soap, not only to continue supporting child mental health initiatives but also to assist medical services in Gaza. Proceeds will be directed towards charities providing prosthetic limbs to those injured in the conflict, shedding light on the very real and pressing needs of individuals in the area. This initiative is part of Lush’s broader ongoing commitment to addressing urgent social issues, reaffirming their role as an advocate for change within the beauty industry.

Historically, Lush has not shied away from taking stances on divisive political topics. After facing issues in Hull during protests against immigration, Lush displayed a firm commitment to human rights by criticizing the rhetoric of hate. With operations spanning over 50 countries and more than 100 shops in the U.K. and Ireland, Lush remains dedicated to using its platform to advocate for those affected by injustice. By placing humanitarian concerns at the forefront of its identity, the brand seeks not only to sell cosmetics but to create meaningful change in society.
