L’Oréal Acquires Color Wow

The beauty industry is witnessing a notable shift with major companies making significant acquisitions, and L’Oréal’s recent move to buy Color Wow exemplifies this trend. Founded by entrepreneur Gail Federici, Color Wow has quickly gained attention for its standout product, the Dream Coat Supernatural Spray. This hair care solution is so popular that it sells every 4.4 seconds, creating a buzz in both professional salons and consumer markets alike. Color Wow is currently generating revenue figures exceeding $300 million, with aspirations for a valuation around $1 billion, mirroring the lucrative nature of recent beauty deals that have taken place this year.

For L’Oréal, this acquisition comes after a series of strategic purchases, including a majority stake in the British cosmetics brand Medik8 for about €1 billion. This indicates L’Oréal’s commitment to expanding its portfolio, particularly in hair care, where their Professional Products Division reported a successful sales figure of 4.89 billion euros in 2024 and saw growth of approximately 5 percent year-on-year. Omar Hajeri, the president of L’Oréal’s Professional Products Division, expressed excitement about integrating Color Wow, emphasizing the brand’s unique products and dedicated customer following as key factors in their burgeoning market presence.

Color Wow has established itself as a household name in high-end hair care and is widely distributed through salons, Sephora, and major online retailers in the U.S. and abroad. Federici, who has a rich history in the beauty industry, recognized the potential for global expansion with Color Wow. The brand stood out thanks to its innovative solutions developed in response to unmet consumer needs, such as the Root Cover Up Powder, created to address the challenges of hair maintenance between dye sessions. This thoughtful approach to product development has resulted in an impressive lineup of bestsellers, including the Xtra Large Bombshell Volumizer and Dream Cocktail Carb Infused Leave-In Thickening Treatment.

As Color Wow prepares to integrate into L’Oréal’s vast network, Federici has emphasized her commitment to maintaining the brand’s ethos and culture, important elements that have been pivotal to its success from its inception. In an exclusive interview, she discussed how her team, comprised of industry veterans from the John Frieda days, has been instrumental in navigating the complexities of today’s market. As digital marketing and social media dynamics evolve rapidly, the pressure to consistently create relevant content has added layers of stress to running a brand compared to her earlier experiences, where traditional advertising was the norm.

This acquisition marks a critical point in a series of striking beauty deals at a time when the market is beginning to show signs of increased activity. Federici acknowledged the cautious approach many investors are taking currently, citing that Color Wow’s robust performance offers a degree of comfort in an uncertain landscape. Her ambition is clear: to continue driving growth and innovation for the brand, ensuring that it remains relevant and impactful in the hair care sector.

At 64, Federici’s journey with Color Wow showcases her relentless spirit and passion for creating products that resonate with consumers. She finds joy not only in the success of her brand but also in the collaborative process with her team, emphasizing the importance of creating solutions that deliver genuine value. With an eye on the future, she remains open to new ideas and opportunities, driven not by financial gain but the desire to empower and assist consumers through thoughtful product design and innovation. Her story highlights the vibrant possibilities within the beauty industry and the enduring potential for growth and influence.
