Celebrating a Milestone: The Evolution of Latinas in Beauty
As Latinas in Beauty marks its first anniversary, the organization is not just reflecting on its past but actively shaping its future. Led by cofounders Nadine Tapia, Emily Perez, and Margarita Arriagada, the nonprofit has made significant strides in advocating for equity within the beauty industry. With initiatives such as an Equity Pledge and a newly launched accelerator program, the organization is mobilizing resources to uplift Latina beauty professionals. The recent formation of an advisory board consisting of industry executives underscores their commitment to creating a sustainable and inclusive future for all.
The journey of Latinas in Beauty began five years ago, driven by a personal mission to create opportunities for Latinas in the industry. As Perez explains, the organization aims to unite individuals and provide access to education, networks, and resources necessary for professional and entrepreneurial success. The relaunch in 2024 marked a renewed focus and collaborative effort to support the growing community, ensuring that Latinas in beauty are well-represented and equipped to thrive.
A cornerstone of their mission is the Equity Pledge, which invites industry CEOs to commit to advancing Latino professionals. Unlike many initiatives that rely on specific targets, Arriagada notes that the Pledge is intentionally flexible. This approach allows for genuine partnerships to evolve, emphasizing collaboration and understanding the complexities of the issues faced by Latinas in the beauty field. The organization hopes to spark meaningful engagement at all levels, focusing on fostering dialogue rather than simply fulfilling quotas.
In addition to the Equity Pledge, the organization’s partnership with Pepperdine University has birthed the Beauty Bravura Accelerator Program. Designed to support early-stage beauty brands, this initiative aims to address gaps in education, funding, and marketing. Tapia highlights the success of their inaugural cohort, which included 13 emerging brands and industry professionals. By providing essential support, the program hopes to empower the next generation of beauty entrepreneurs who have historically been underserved.
Despite facing challenges related to broader diversity and inclusion efforts, Latinas in Beauty remains committed to an all-inclusive platform. Arriagada stresses that while the focus is on the Latina community, the organization welcomes anyone interested in contributing to this mission. The goal is not simply to increase Latino representation in beauty products but to create an environment that supports and nurtures professionals across the industry, fostering a culture of growth and innovation.
The establishment of an advisory board marks an exciting new chapter for the organization. Comprising retail veterans and influential figures, the board aims to harness collective wisdom and drive strategic initiatives. Board members like Maria Salcedo and Kimberly Villatoro emphasize the business imperative of embracing diversity, particularly in light of shifting consumer demographics. With Gen Z and Gen Alpha leading the charge for inclusivity, the organization anticipates that its efforts will resonate not just within the Latina community but also across a wider demographic of consumers, securing a vital space in the evolving beauty landscape.
