Jean Paul Gaultier has recently embarked on an exciting partnership with New York’s LGBT Community Center, infusing creativity and artistry into the fashion and fragrance world. This collaboration kicks off with the exhibition titled “Et Gaultier Créa L’Homme: Le Male — Past, Present, Future.” Running for just two days, the event promises a sensory experience that directly draws inspiration from Gaultier’s iconic fragrance, Le Male. The exhibition’s design features three distinct stages, each representing the fragrance’s essential notes: the top, heart, and base, allowing visitors to journey through the olfactory elements that define this scent.

The exhibition opens with a daring concept described as an “olfactory striptease,” which sets the tone for the rest of the event. Here, visitors can enjoy the aroma of Le Male as it fills the space, surrounded by an atmosphere rich with erotic motifs. Following this immersive introduction, the exhibition transforms into a theater-like environment filled with striking visual elements, including bustiers and leather abs juxtaposed with sailor vests and unisex skirts. This rich tapestry of designs not only showcases Gaultier’s distinctive style but also celebrates the fluidity and diversity of gender expression.

In addition to Gaultier’s creations, the exhibition features works from contemporary artists such as Pepo Moreno and graffiti artist Hugo Gyrl. Photography takes center stage with contributions from Matías Alvial, Elliott Jerome Brown Jr., Hunter Abrams, and Sam Lee. This diverse lineup highlights the intersection of art and fragrance while emphasizing the community aspect of the event, underlining what it means to come together to celebrate identity and expression through various forms of creativity.

Frédéric Appaire, vice president of fragrances for Jean Paul Gaultier, reflects on the importance of this partnership. He sees The Center as a testament to the values that Gaultier aims to revive, especially among younger generations who may not be well-versed in the brand’s rich history. Established in the 1980s as a crucial resource during the AIDS crisis, The Center has been instrumental in supporting the LGBT community. Gaultier has been a steadfast supporter for five years, even receiving the Corporate Impact Award at The Center Dinner in 2024, further solidifying their joint mission to foster awareness and support.

Appaire emphasizes that sharing the brand’s story and its connection to the community is vital. By re-engaging with the essence of Gaultier’s identity, the exhibition not only honors its legacy but also makes it relevant to younger audiences. The collaboration also highlights the creative bond between Jean Paul Gaultier and renowned perfumer Francis Kurkdjian, dating back to the creation of Le Male in the 1990s. This exhibition is envisioned as a profound experience rooted deeply in the artistic and cultural dialogues of today.

The positive reception and growth of the Jean Paul Gaultier brand reflect the effectiveness of this revitalization effort. Appaire notes that the company is thriving, particularly with recent successes in enhancing its feminine fragrance line, starting with the launch of their Divine scent. As Gaultier continues to lead growth within its parent company, Puig, it signifies a promising future—strongly intertwined with the history and values that have shaped its journey, reinforcing the empowerment of the LGBT community and the celebration of individuality through art and fragrance.
