Celebrating a Century of Shalimar: A Fragrant Journey
Guerlain’s iconic fragrance, Shalimar, is stepping into the spotlight as it celebrates a remarkable 100 years. To mark this significant milestone, the “Shalimar Centennial: 100 Years of Love” exhibition will take place from November 5 to 20 at the newly reopened Waldorf Astoria New York. This extraordinary event invites fragrance enthusiasts and the curious alike to explore the rich heritage and sensory experiences tied to one of the world’s most beloved perfumes.
The exhibition promises an immersive experience, featuring a “discovery room” that delves into the origins of Shalimar. Attendees will be captivated by videos and visual displays that outline the perfume’s inception, along with insights into Guerlain’s storied history as a brand under LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton. The allure of the fragrance is echoed in a special olfactory room, where key scent notes—such as vanilla, bergamot, tonka bean, iris, rose, and jasmine—are celebrated. This setup not only educates visitors but also evokes the memories and emotions tied to each exquisite note.
Shalimar’s 100th birthday will also be celebrated with a wide array of unique offerings. A dedicated point of sale will showcase the entire Shalimar range, including the recent addition, Shalimar L’Essence. Moreover, various bottle designs from the past century will be on display, highlighting the evolution of this classic fragrance. Visitors can also look forward to branded totes and postcards, along with a complimentary Champagne voucher for the Clock Tower Bar. Additionally, testers of Shalimar L’Essence will allow guests to engage with the fragrance in a personal way, making the exhibition a true celebration of sensory indulgence.
In tandem with the exhibition, Guerlain has ambitious plans for the Waldorf Astoria. Earlier this year, the brand announced the opening of its grandest spa yet, focusing on wellness and longevity—an initiative that perfectly aligns with the contemporary emphasis on self-care and holistic well-being. This new spa will offer a luxurious escape, enhancing the Guerlain experience for all visitors to the historic hotel.
Original creator Jacques Guerlain introduced Shalimar to the world in 1925, and since then, it has seen numerous reinterpretations. To commemorate this landmark anniversary, Guerlain commissioned artist Janaïna Milheiro to craft a limited-edition bottle design, adding an artistic touch to a beloved classic. This collaboration exemplifies how timeless fragrances can continuously evolve while honoring their past.
The fragrance market remains robust, with LVMH reporting a 2% increase in perfumes and cosmetics sales—evidence of the ongoing demand for luxury fragrances. In the U.S., fragrance sales grew by 6% in the first half of the year, reaching an impressive $3.9 billion, propelled by ultra-luxury products. Shalimar’s centennial celebration is not just a nod to its illustrious past but a clear reminder of how this iconic scent continues to resonate with modern consumers, ensuring its legacy endures well into the future.
