Macy’s Flower Show Celebrates 50 Years with a Flourish

The magic of spring is in the air as Macy’s heralds the return of its beloved Flower Show, marking a significant milestone this year with its 50th anniversary. Bigger and more vibrant than ever, the grand celebration stands out with an extensive three-week showcase at the iconic Herald Square location—from April 27 to May 18. Traditionally, this floral extravaganza was a two-week event, but the surge in demand has prompted Macy’s to extend its duration, attracting an estimated million visitors eager to revel in the beauty of flowers and the spirit of spring, as noted by Sharon Otterman, Macy’s chief marketing officer.

This year, the Flower Show embraces the whimsical theme of “Surrealist Garden.” Attendees can expect to be swept away by oversized floral installations and imaginative structures resembling clouds crafted from soft hydrangeas. The artistry behind the event comes courtesy of a talented collaboration with ManscapersNY for landscape design and The Bouqs Co. for floral arrangements, ensuring an immersive and visually stunning experience. This unique blend of creativity and nature highlights Macy’s commitment to celebrating floral beauty and the artistry involved in its presentation.

Traditionally launched on the first day of spring, the Flower Show has been strategically rescheduled for this year to coincide with Mother’s Day. This shift is aimed to enhance the gifting experience for shoppers seeking to celebrate the special women in their lives. Otterman explains the rationale behind the timing, emphasizing the need to connect the event with familial traditions: “We purposely moved it this year to really help our customers with gifting for Mother’s Day.” This thoughtful approach adds a layer of significance to the event, making it not just a visual feast but also a heartfelt celebration of love and appreciation.

The 2024 iteration of the Flower Show promises to be an unforgettable experience, boasting a staggering collection of 8,000 plants and an impressive 45,000 flower stems. With 45 different florals on display, Otterman mentions how they keep the flowers refreshed throughout the event, ensuring that each visit can offer a new visual delight. This transformative experience extends beyond mere observation; with interactive elements and artistic displays, visitors are invited not just to look but to engage and immerse themselves in the fragrant beauty surrounding them.

Adding a fresh twist to the occasion, Macy’s has partnered with YSL Beauty, merging the worlds of fragrance and florals. This collaboration represents a union of cultural significance, as both brands share a deep appreciation for the beauty of flowers. YSL’s U.S. general manager, Juliette Ferret, underscores this synergy, stating, “The Flower Show is more than a retail event; it’s a cultural moment.” Together, Macy’s and YSL will offer an interactive experience called “YSL Beauty: Art of Flowers,” featuring installations inspired by YSL’s signature fragrances. Guests will embark on a sensory journey as each fragrance’s unique notes correspond to floral themes in the displays, enhancing their overall experience.

Beyond its partnerships, Macy’s is committed to offering an array of limited-edition merchandise related to the Flower Show, including home décor, sleep items, and jewelry. Collaborations with familiar names such as Lego, Kendra Scott, and MarieBelle promise to add excitement and novelty. Guests will have opportunities to engage hands-on, such as building their own bouquets from Lego bricks or testing YSL Beauty’s latest offerings. The event is designed to be a multi-sensory exploration, where the sounds, sights, and scents come together to create a memorable atmosphere. In the midst of uncertainties regarding the weather, Otterman optimistically quips, “April showers are going to bring May flowers,” suggesting that a sunny disposition is just around the corner, potentially bringing even more reason to celebrate with Macy’s in bloom.

This year’s Flower Show at Macy’s Herald Square is set to be a jubilant homage to spring, making it a must-visit for both locals and tourists alike.
