Hung Vanngo: The Journey from Refugee to Beauty Entrepreneur

Hung Vanngo, the renowned makeup artist previously celebrated for his glamorous aesthetic, is now stepping into the entrepreneurial realm by launching his own beauty line, Hung Vanngo Beauty. This collection is not just a business venture; it reflects Vanngo’s artistic vision and passion for makeup. The lineup includes an eye shadow palette, two eyeliners, a lipstick, a lip liner, a bronzer, and a blush, with prices ranging from $22 to $49. Set to debut both online and in-store at Sephora on September 8th, this collection signifies Vanngo’s commitment to empowering beauty enthusiasts—novices and experts alike.

Vanngo’s story is deeply inspiring, originating from a challenging childhood. He fled Vietnam, spent time in a refugee camp in Thailand, and eventually settled in Calgary, Canada. Art has always been a cornerstone of Vanngo’s life, with initial aspirations of becoming a hairstylist soon evolving into a love for makeup. Drawing parallels between makeup and painting, he incorporates a painterly approach into his beauty range, emphasizing creativity and color. As he reflects on his journey, the importance of encouraging others to embrace color and boldness has never been more crucial for him.

Throughout his two-decade career, Vanngo has maintained a consistent aesthetic rooted in glamor. His experiences have taught him that many women feel daunted by vibrant colors, seeing them as intimidating hurdles rather than exciting opportunities. "We wanted to create a line that doesn’t make people feel intimidated," he explains, showing how his line aims to refine the idea of "beauty basics" while simultaneously celebrating more daring options. This effort is embodied by his Color Story Eyeshadow Palettes, which come in shades with catchy names like Outstanding Orange and Rebellious Red & Pink—perfect for both those who may fear color and those who crave it.

The COVID-19 pandemic spurred the development of his brand, allowing him to integrate his expertise with a powerful online platform. Launched alongside the brand was his YouTube channel, where he shares long-format tutorials aimed at demystifying the makeup application process. With around 600,000 subscribers engaging in his content, Vanngo has recognized the potential of using this platform to offer education and build a community around makeup—a space where individuals can explore their creativity without judgment.

Vanngo’s previous collaborations and consultations with other beauty brands have further informed his approach to creating his own line. He understands that while he is a skilled makeup artist, he also needs to consider the needs of makeup consumers who are not professionals. “I have to think not just as a makeup artist, but as a consumer as well,” he shares, showcasing his commitment to inclusivity and accessibility within the industry. Being cognizant of what mainstream consumers desire in beauty products is crucial, and he aims to fill the market demand for vibrant colors.

Looking ahead, Vanngo has ambitious plans for expansion, expressing a desire to develop a comprehensive line that continues to prioritize color exploration. He understands that the beauty industry is always evolving and believes that there’s still a gap to be filled with stunning pigments and shades. By taking ownership of his name and brand, Vanngo not only reclaims his identity from his childhood but also seeks to inspire others to embrace their uniqueness and creativity. Ultimately, as he sets forth on this new chapter, Hung Vanngo is not just building a beauty brand but establishing a legacy rooted in empowerment and artistic expression.
