Billy Porter is stepping into the beauty space with his new makeup and skincare line, Black Mona Lisa, launching in alignment with his fifth studio album. The collection boasts a range of lightweight, user-friendly products, including a collagen and retinol serum, kale face cleanser, eye cream, liquid lipsticks, and shimmering eye colors, catering to various beauty needs at accessible prices ranging from $9.99 to $66.99. This launch reflects Porter’s personal journey and belief in the importance of self-exploration and empowerment.

In a recent conversation, Porter shared his vision for the brand, emphasizing that it’s about the joy of exploration. “This first outing is about identifying who you really are and understanding that you are worthy,” he stated, advocating for the fearless expression of one’s identity. His mission is to encourage individuals to embrace their authentic selves, transcending societal standards and norms, which deeply resonate with his experiences as an artist and performer.

Porter’s relationship with beauty dates back to his teenage years when he developed a keen interest in skincare. At just 14, he boldly approached the Clinique counter at a Pittsburgh department store, eager to establish a skincare routine. His commitment to skincare has roots in his upbringing; as a Black person, moisturizing has always been a crucial step following any exposure to soap and water. This ingrained knowledge and routine laid the foundation for his current venture, merging personal history with professional ambition.

Throughout his career, Porter has navigated a wide array of personas, often utilizing makeup as a transformative tool, yet his personal journey with beauty has not been without complications. He admits to moments of hesitation regarding self-expression, especially during times when societal expectations loomed large. “There were days when I wanted to wear some lipstick, but I wouldn’t do it because of whatever the status quo was,” he reflected. His ongoing exploration of beauty reflects a deeper journey of self-acceptance and creativity.

Younger generations’ evolving understanding of identity has also influenced Porter’s approach to beauty. He observes that the traditional rules surrounding gender and identity are dissolving, encouraging authenticity and creativity. “This is my authentic self, and I didn’t even know it,” he explained of his journey, expressing his desire for Black Mona Lisa to embody that freedom for others. The brand aims to liberate individuals to freely express themselves, ensuring beauty is not confined to societal norms but is instead a celebration of individuality.

While Black Mona Lisa currently focuses on lightweight products, Porter has future plans to expand the brand’s offerings, including a diverse range of foundation shades catering to all skin tones. He envisions creating a beauty empire that extends beyond cosmetics, potentially encompassing fashion and home goods. With his sights set on broader aspirations, Porter describes Black Mona Lisa as “ever-present,” ensuring the brand will constitute a lasting legacy in the beauty industry. The collection is now available at blackmonalisabeauty.com, inviting consumers to explore their beauty in a way that’s personal and rewarding.
