EXCLUSIVE: Beekman 1802 Founders Release Book ‘G.O.A.T. Wisdom: How to Build a Truly Great Business’

In a significant milestone for Beekman 1802, founders Dr. Brent Ridge and Josh Kilmer-Purcell are excited to share their journey over the past 15 years through their upcoming book, “G.O.A.T. Wisdom: How to Build a Truly Great Business.” Set to release on July 1, this book embodies the founders’ insights and philosophies on running a successful business, emphasizing the value of grassroots entrepreneurship. As they reflect on their brand’s evolution, they seek to provide a roadmap for aspiring and current business owners alike, emphasizing the importance of community and ethical practices amidst today’s economic disparities.

The inspiration for the book came from observing rising inequalities between the wealthy and the middle class. Ridge noted that while stories of exceptional triumphs abound, there wasn’t a straightforward guide on how to cultivate a sustainable business rooted in community values. He emphasized that Beekman 1802 identifies as a “Main Street brand,” contributing unique insights into the evolving landscape of Middle America. This perspective is vital, especially as small businesses grapple with challenges posed by economic shifts, and they aspire to amplify the voices of hardworking entrepreneurs.

Structured around 12 guiding principles, the book delves into various aspects of business management from team collaboration to crafting a positive company culture. Notable principles include “Two Heads Are Better Than One,” focusing on partnership dynamics, and “Love Thy Neighbor,” which addresses the importance of compassionate marketing. Ridge describes the book as a practical primer for both new entrepreneurs and those seeking to fortify their existing enterprises. The emphasis on foundational values illustrates their belief that business growth can—and should—remain rooted in community and care.

At the heart of the Beekman 1802 philosophy is the concept of building a “love brand,” which Ridge argues newer businesses often overlook. Inspired by their life on a farm where goats provide the milk for their products, the book’s title reflects a deeper ethos of nurturing and sustainability. Ridge aims to reframe familiar business wisdom through the lens of timeless proverbs and cultural maxims, encouraging readers to apply these age-old lessons creatively in today’s context. By intertwining personal anecdotes and researched insights, the book seeks to inspire readers to create more than just profitable ventures but brands that resonate emotionally with their audience.

The narrative not only shares practical business wisdom but also offers a behind-the-scenes look at Beekman’s journey, revealing stories that fans might not be familiar with. Ridge acknowledged that various audiences will read the book, from casual readers to loyal customers, ensuring that everyone finds something rewarding within its pages. The book’s dedication to their customers, referred to as “neighbors,” underscores their commitment to community and connection, further solidifying their brand’s values.

Writing this book has also been a reflective process for Ridge and Kilmer-Purcell, providing a chance to pause and evaluate their entrepreneurial journey. As they prepare to release this book—a first for the Harvard Business Review Press focused on the beauty industry—they recognize its significance not just for their brand, but for the broader business community. Ridge’s observation about the evolving nature of the beauty industry underlines its cultural relevance, signaling a shift that may encourage more businesses in this sector to share their stories and insights in innovative ways.
