Breaking New Ground in the Beauty Industry: The Story of Avigon Belle Paphitis and Gorgeous Nothings

Avigon Belle Paphitis is ready to make waves in the beauty world with the launch of her new fragrance brand, Gorgeous Nothings, following her six years of experience as a beauty consultant. Beginning on February 26, the 36-year-old Melbourne-based entrepreneur will introduce Edition 1, a 100ml eau de parfum, as the start of her venture. After five years of development, Gorgeous Nothings has gained recognition as a finalist in the prestigious Estée Lauder Co. incubator program, The Catalysts, which highlights innovation and creativity in beauty.

Initially, the fragrance will be available on Gorgeous Nothings’ Australian website and at Pan After, a unique retailer in Melbourne known for its ethically sourced products. The brand is set to expand further, with plans for a global website launch in March and ongoing discussions about partnerships with select retailers in major cities like London and Paris. Following Edition 1, Paphitis has plans for more launches, including Edition 2, which will introduce a color product, and Edition 3, focusing on body care set to be released in October.

What makes this fragrance particularly compelling is its allure and responsible formulation. Developed with renowned French perfumer Pierre Negrin, the scent features creamy top notes of aldehyde, cedar wood, musk, and amber. Notably, 95.1% of its ingredients are upcycled, emphasizing sustainability in a market that often prioritizes speed over substance. Additionally, Paphitis’ commitment to reducing packaging waste is evident in the design of her refillable fragrance system. Customers can purchase the product in two parts: a glass flaçon and an aluminum refill, both packaged thoughtfully in silk pouches made from upcycled materials.

Paphitis comes from a lineage rich in beauty industry experience; she is the daughter of Aesop founder Dennis Paphitis, although her journey has been uniquely her own. After gaining diverse expertise in communications, product management, and marketing across global cities like London and Los Angeles, Paphitis launched her consultancy. Rebranded as Vanity Country Club, the consultancy partners with various brands, helping them carve their paths in the industry. This breadth of experience sets her apart as a second-generation entrepreneur, driving her vision for Gorgeous Nothings into reality.

However, the genesis of Gorgeous Nothings was fuelled by frustration with the industry’s fast-paced nature. Paphitis recognized an urgent need for alternatives, stating she felt disillusioned by the trend of sacrificing quality for scale. Her creative vision stems from a desire for luxury that’s still accessible, addressing a gap she identified in the market. With the ambitious goal of launching 20 new products in her development pipeline, Paphitis aims to establish a brand that redefines luxury through a lens of sustainability and creativity.

Pierre Negrin echoes Paphitis’ sentiments about the future of the beauty industry, describing Gorgeous Nothings as not only an exciting project but also a reflection of the changing values of consumers today. As the industry shifts toward more ethical practices, Negrin believes that sustainability in fragrance will become increasingly vital, with brands focusing on their ecological footprints. Paphitis and Negrin’s collaboration represents a promising beginning, reminding us that the future of perfumery can harmonize luxury with responsibility.
