Everyone Wants to Smell Like SPF — Again

The Sunshine of New Fragrances

The fragrance industry is currently basking in a wave of sunny optimism, largely fueled by the debut of new sun care-inspired scents. Brands like Vacation and Sun Bum are leading the charge, offering a fresh take on summer aromas. Vacation has launched an enticing trio of body mists, each priced at $24, which draws inspiration from its popular SPF products. Meanwhile, Sun Bum’s Sonny No. 101 perfume, which retails for $49.99, captures the essence of its beloved original SPF in a delightful coconut scent. Both brands are tapping into nostalgia and summer vibes, bringing an element of fun and warmth to fragrance shopping this season.

The excitement around Sun Bum’s Sonny No. 101 is palpable. Dubbed “smelling like the first day of summer,” it generated a staggering waitlist of 10,000 eager customers and sold out within three hours of launch. The brand had been listening to its customers, many of whom expressed a desire for a perfume version of its signature SPF scent. This demand was highlighted by a viral TikTok video, where a user revealed that they had been using the SPF spray as a makeshift fragrance, further validating the brand’s decision to introduce a dedicated scent.

Vacation’s body mist collection is no less popular, boasting a waitlist of over 3,000 people. This enticing lineup draws upon the scents of products like their chardonnay body oil and after-sun aloe vera gel. Developed by talented perfumers Carlos Huber and Rodrigo Flores-Roux, these body mists promise to evoke the carefree days of summer, perfect for fans of warm, beachy fragrances. Similarly, Snif has joined the fray with its $28 Spray Tan body mist, capturing notes of coconut and vanilla, while Skylar offered a unique twist with its Scent-Screen SPF 30 mist. This innovative product marries the concepts of sun protection and fragrant enjoyment, and its launch resulted in a remarkable 566% increase in engagement on the brand’s Instagram account.

Despite this contemporary surge in sun-inspired fragrances, the desire to smell like summer isn’t a new phenomenon. Back in 2002, Bobbi Brown Cosmetics launched its Beach Eau de Parfum, featuring refreshing notes reminiscent of sea spray and mandarin. By 2012, Maison Margiela introduced its Beach Walk Eau de Toilette, a fragrance that merged coconut milk and lemon for a blissful, beachy aroma. These earlier launches laid the groundwork for the current trend, which highlights a shift in consumer preferences towards lighter, more casual perfume formats instead of heavier eaux de parfum.

Today’s market shows a clear preference for body mists and sprays over traditional perfume, with a significant 94% sales growth in prestige body sprays reported for 2024, far exceeding the overall 12% growth in prestige fragrances. This trend is not just a momentary fad but reflects a change in consumer behavior, where people are increasingly seeking gender-neutral and seasonal fragrance options that can cater to a wide array of occasions. Such adaptations signal a shift towards more relaxed and versatile fragrance choices that resonate with modern lifestyles.

As the fragrance landscape evolves, these summer-and-SPF-inspired scents are not just adding variety but also enhancing the consumer experience. They encapsulate the essence of joy and freedom associated with warm weather, highlighting how fragrances can evoke specific memories and emotions. With brands continuously innovating and responding to consumer demands, the market is set to thrive, promising that sunny days in the fragrance category are just beginning.
