In an exciting new chapter for Puig, the renowned Spanish fragrance company is honoring its rich heritage with a fresh collection of eaux de cologne, aptly named Colonias Absolutas Puig. This new line, developed in collaboration with master perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena, reflects both the company’s legacy and its commitment to innovation. Manuel Puig, the vice chairman and a third-generation member of the Puig family, played a pivotal role in bringing this collection to life, highlighting the importance of family tradition in the brand’s identity.
At the heart of Colonias Absolutas Puig lies the inspiration of Agua Lavanda Puig, launched in 1940, which served as a pioneering fragrance for the brand. The design of the new bottles, reminiscent of traditional Balearic jars, draws from a 1962 design by André Ricard, showcasing Puig’s longstanding commitment to blending functionality with artistry. The collection includes Agua Brava, Agua Noble, and Agua Lavanda Iris, each a modern reinterpretation of historical Puig fragrances, while Agua Mediterránea offers a new olfactory experience, celebrating the Mediterranean, the birthplace of Puig and its founding family.
Jean-Claude Ellena, known for his unique approach to perfumery, emphasizes the significance of the Mediterranean in shaping both Puig’s identity and the new fragrances. He describes the region as a melting pot of cultures that influence the essence of the scents. This cultural richness is reflected in the distinct notes used in each fragrance, capturing not just scents but the lifestyle and spirit of the Mediterranean.
Ellena was drawn to the project, especially knowing that these colognes were intended as a tribute to Antonio Puig, who founded the company in 1914. Eau de cologne holds a special place in fragrance history—timeless, genderless, and light. However, the Colonias Absolutas elevate this traditional form, offering a high concentration of perfume oils, resulting in long-lasting scents that honor both tradition and modern sensibilities.
Each fragrance in the collection is a testament to Ellena’s minimalist approach. While many modern fragrances tend to incorporate a plethora of notes, Ellena’s creations focus on a few core ingredients that resonate deeply. Agua Brava, for instance, has been refined to present a more sensual, woodier scent than its 1968 predecessor. In contrast, Agua Lavanda Iris combines lavender with iris notes for a fresh take, while Agua Noble features a rich blend of Andalusian leather and citrus elements.
Finally, Agua Mediterránea stands out with its unique composition, featuring fig tree leaf, mastic tree, wild mint, cedar, and citrus notes. These scents harmonize to create a captivating experience that encapsulates the warmth and essence of the Mediterranean landscape. As Ellena aptly puts it, Manuel Puig’s dedication to crafting these scents is testament to a profound love for perfume, aiming to celebrate and honor a storied legacy that continues to evolve. The terracotta cases for the eaux de cologne further reflect a connection to the earth, reminding users of the warmth and richness that underpin the Puig tradition.
