Celluby Raises 8.1 Million Euros to Eliminate Microplastics in Personal Care Products

Addressing Microplastics in Personal Care Products: Cellugy’s Innovative Solution

In an impressive stride towards sustainability, Danish biotech firm Cellugy has been awarded €8.1 million from the European Union’s Life program to tackle the pervasive issue of microplastics in personal care products. With this funding, Cellugy aims to promote its bio-based alternative, EcoFlexy, which stands to replace traditional microplastic ingredients in cosmetics and enhance environmental preservation. This initiative not only furthers the company’s mission but aligns with broader EU efforts to combat climate change and pollution.

Cellugy’s flagship product, EcoFlexy Rheo, marks a significant leap in the personal care industry. It is billed as the first high-performance rheology modifier that is completely biobased and biodegradable. With competitive pricing, EcoFlexy Rheo offers a sustainable substitute for the conventional microplastics and fossil ingredients commonly found in products like facial scrubs and liquid soaps. The company emphasizes that the beauty sector is increasingly seeking innovative solutions that adhere to the principles of sustainability and environmental care, thus making EcoFlexy a timely alternative.

The dangers of microplastics have become an urgent concern, not just for ecosystems but for human health as well. Studies indicate that microplastics can infiltrate the human body through various means, including inhalation and skin absorption. Cellugy stresses the importance of this issue, noting that around 70% of the rheology modifier market heavily relies on petrochemical-based materials, which are recognized for their persistent and hazardous nature under EU regulations. By shifting to EcoFlexy, Cellugy aims to reduce environmental pollution while ensuring product safety.

Cellugy’s Biocare4life project is projected to significantly reduce the release of microplastics. By the project’s conclusion, it expects to prevent approximately 259 tons of microplastics per year, with ambitions to scale that to 1,289 tons annually by 2034. This effort could equate to the removal of millions of contaminated products from the market, a critical goal considering estimates that the beauty industry stands to lose around €12 billion due to upcoming EU bans on microplastics and restrictions on harmful chemicals.

However, challenges remain for Cellugy and the broader industry. The transition to bio-based materials necessitates solutions that do more than simply aim for sustainability; they must also outperform traditional petrochemical products in terms of usability and performance. Isabel Alvarez-Martos, Cellugy’s CEO and co-founder, highlights the necessity for high-quality alternatives that can seamlessly fit into existing product lines, stating, “Only when bio-based materials match or exceed the performance and economics of traditional ingredients will we see the transformation needed to protect both human health and our planet.”

The Biocare4life initiative is set to drive the scaling process for EcoFlexy, featuring collaborations with a consortium of experts in biotechnology, sustainability, and data management. These partnerships are expected to enhance the project’s technical footing while ensuring its progress is measurable and impactful. As thinkers in this field note, success in scaling biotech solutions is vital for realizing their inherent value, aligning economic interests with environmental imperatives. With backing from the EU and collaboration across various sectors, Cellugy is on a compelling path toward fostering greater sustainability and innovation in personal care.
