Amouage Unveils New Fragrance, Opus XVI Timber, and Shares Retail Expansion Plans

Amouage’s Opus XVI Timber: A Tribute to Nature’s Wisdom

Omani luxury perfume house Amouage continues its artistic journey with the introduction of its latest fragrance, Opus XVI Timber. This release is part of the acclaimed Library Collection, which is dedicated to exploring the profound wisdom inherent in the natural world. With a focus on woody notes, Timber evokes the grandeur and resilience of nature’s most enduring creations, particularly through the imagery of towering sequoias. Renaud Salmon, Amouage’s chief creative officer, describes the opening of Timber as a bold, monolithic experience. He likens it to standing before a massive sequoia tree, noting that as the fragrance develops, it reveals intricate layers reminiscent of aged bark and various wood tones.

The fragrance, which boasts a 25% eau de parfum concentration, is set to be available in Amouage boutiques in Oman and the United Arab Emirates on August 8, with a global release following on September 1. Priced at $380 for a 100ml bottle in the U.S., Timber marks another step in Amouage’s impressive growth trajectory. The company reported a remarkable 30 percent growth in 2024, with annual retail sales surpassing $260 million—indicative of their evolving place in the global perfumery market, where they have outpaced competitors by approximately 2.5 times.

Salmon attributes this success to Amouage’s dedication to a "transparent craftsmanship-driven business model." Each fragrance is meticulously crafted by hand at their manufacturing facility in Muscat. This artisan approach allows them to ensure that every product meets high standards of quality and embodies Omani heritage. Notably, their “Exceptional Extraits” collection, consisting of high-concentration perfumes, grew an astonishing 116 percent last year, now accounting for 17 percent of the company’s total sales. This success reflects an increasing appreciation for the artistry and cultural significance embedded in their fragrances.

The conceptualization of Opus XVI Timber stems from the creative mind of perfumer Alexis Grugeon. The fragrance begins with vibrant notes of cypress, cardamom, and lavandin, creating an atmosphere of forward-thinking openness. Salmon emphasizes a unique parallel between California’s giant sequoias and Oman’s historic frankincense trees, both of which symbolize wisdom and permanence within their respective cultures. This inspiration enhances the fragrance’s narrative, as both trees have thrived through millennia of change, standing as testaments to nature’s resilience.

Amouage’s history is steeped in tradition, founded in 1983 by Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said, who initially envisioned the brand as a means to share Oman’s rich heritage through fragrance. Salmon reflects on how, in the early days, owning an Amouage perfume was a privilege, with products given only as gifts from the Sultan. This royal heritage continues to inform the brand’s philosophy and approach. Opus XVI Timber is presented in a signature khanjar flacon, with the packaging designed by Belgian artist Louise Mertens. The design integrates Omani cultural symbols, illustrating the brand’s commitment to honoring its roots while appealing to a global audience.

Under Salmon’s leadership, Amouage has streamlined its portfolio, focusing on quality over quantity; the number of fragrances has been pared down from over 80 to a curated selection of 60. This reflects a dedication to ensuring that every fragrance released is truly exceptional. In addition to refining their offerings, Salmon has worked to create retail spaces that tell immersive stories, inspired by nature. As Amouage plans to expand by opening 30 new boutiques in key international markets, including Rome, Los Angeles, and South Korea, Timber embodies the brand’s unwavering commitment to exploring nature through the art of fragrance.
