Ami Colé’s Story: A Reflection on Challenges in the Beauty Industry

In September, Ami Colé, a brand envisioned by Diarrha N’Diaye-Mbaye, will close its doors after being a part of the beauty landscape since its inception in 2021. The decision comes as a surprise, especially following an optimistic partnership with Sephora that was announced for 2024. Ami Colé attracted significant investment from notable entities, including L’Oréal’s BOLD venture capital arm and True Beauty Ventures, indicating a hopeful trajectory. However, the brand’s potential was thwarted by underlying complexities within the beauty industry that continue to be a struggle for many.

N’Diaye-Mbaye’s candid reflections about the industry reveal a pressing concern about sustainability and collaboration between brands, retailers, and investors. In her interview with WWD, she voiced her frustrations with the disconnect among industry players, stating that there is a need for a collaborative approach to navigate the evolving landscape of beauty. She emphasized that while partners like Sephora are making an effort, collective engagement is crucial for lasting success. This sentiment underscores a growing urgency for a unified direction among brands in what seems to be a fragmented market.

The revelation of Ami Colé’s impending closure was first shared in a poignant essay in New York Magazine’s The Cut. In tracing her journey leading to the establishment of Ami Colé, N’Diaye-Mbaye drew from her experiences in media and her tenure at both L’Oréal and Glossier. With a mission to celebrate the beauty of melanin-rich skin, she aimed to address the historical marginalization of Black beauty in the mainstream market. Launched in the wake of George Floyd’s tragic death and the renewed focus on supporting Black-owned businesses, Ami Colé embodied a moment of hope and empowerment. Unfortunately, the tides have since turned, leading to reduced funding for Black-owned brands and significant setbacks in diversity and inclusion initiatives.

As a solo founder, N’Diaye-Mbaye faced immense challenges while navigating the tumultuous business environment. Her diligence and resilience were evident, as she sought to maximize potential and optimize operations, often feeling the weight of being a pioneer within the industry. “Are we a business? Yes. Do businesses fail? Yes,” she remarked, emphasizing the harsh reality many entrepreneurs face.

The broader beauty industry has been experiencing significant turmoil, with major companies like Estée Lauder and Coty Inc. cutting back on staff, revealing that these struggles are not limited to smaller brands. The challenges faced by Ami Colé reflect a larger narrative. In speaking candidly about her experiences, N’Diaye-Mbaye highlighted the tough questions that arise when attempting to innovate in a landscape dominated by established players. Her journey aims to serve as a reminder of the broader challenges within the beauty industry, particularly for those seeking to disrupt the status quo.

Ami Colé’s closure is not merely a business decision; it’s a reflection of the complexities and systemic issues that remain unresolved in beauty and beyond. N’Diaye-Mbaye’s vision, once filled with promise, underscores the need for ongoing dialogue and unity among all stakeholders within the industry. Her story embodies the struggle and aspiration present in many Black-owned businesses today, urging an urgent conversation about the future of beauty and inclusivity in an ever-evolving marketplace. In the wake of Ami Colé’s departure, it becomes imperative for the industry to address these gaps, learn from the experiences of pioneers like N’Diaye-Mbaye, and strive for a more equitable future.
