Adir Abergel, WWD Style Awards Honoree, on Celebrating Individuality Through Hair

Adir Abergel’s journey from a kid-colorist in Los Angeles to a highly sought-after hairstylist for A-list celebrities is both inspiring and unique. Starting at just 11 years old, Abergel would mix Revlon box dyes for his aunt and her friends, showing an early flair for hairstyling. He recalls with a smile those formative moments spent in a local Ralph’s, embracing the challenge of color and blow-drying techniques. This playful yet determined beginning set the stage for what would become a remarkable career, driven not only by his talent but also by an inherent desire to celebrate individuality. Abergel’s early experiences fostered a deep commitment to helping others feel empowered and confident, transcending mere hairstyling.

His upbringing played a significant role in shaping his path. Born in Israel to a human rights activist father and an artist mother, Abergel’s childhood was imbued with values of love, equality, and rebellion. Engaging in after-school activities that ranged from dressing up to protesting, he developed a strong sense of identity and purpose. “I was lucky,” he reflects, noting that his parents’ focus on humanity instilled in him a fight for others’ voices to be heard. This mission of empowerment has remained central to his work, reiterating that hairstyling is not just a profession for him but a platform for building confidence and authenticity in his clients.

Relocating to Los Angeles was a turning point in Abergel’s life, marking a shift from school to a more creative, unconventional upbringing. He was drawn to performance and movement, spending hours in a local Guitar Center, where he honed his love for dance. However, a knee injury derailed his aspirations to join the American Ballet Theatre, leading him back to L.A. Here, he seized the opportunity to assist renowned hairstylist Arthur Johns, where his journey into the world of beauty truly began. Under Johns’ mentorship, Abergel learned not just the technical aspects of hairstyling but also the importance of collaboration and relationships within the industry.

As he transitioned from assistant to stylist for high-profile clients, Abergel embraced the notion that his work transcended the celebrity status of those he styled. He refers to the women he works with, including Anne Hathaway and Reese Witherspoon, as “celebrated” rather than simply celebrities. His bond with them is deep-rooted, having experienced their life milestones and transformations. Abergel believes that creating a positive and trusting relationship is vital, as the intimate nature of hairstyling requires alignment in values and energy. He views his role as one of storytelling through hair, crafting looks that resonate with the individual’s essence.

Abergel emphasizes the transformative power of hair, calling it “one of the most powerful accessories on the planet.” He understands that hair can dramatically shape a person’s identity and presence in any space. His artistic approach to hairstyling involves manipulating hair to express various aspects of a person’s character. Among his memorable creations are iconic looks for stars like Britney Spears and Gwyneth Paltrow, which have left a lasting impact on red carpet fashion. Yet, he also finds joy in the personal projects that humorously highlight his relationship with his husband, such as elaborate Halloween wigs that he constructs, showcasing his creative flair in both professional and personal domains.

Despite his hectic schedule and the multitude of celebrity engagements, Abergel maintains a laid-back approach to his own hair, often opting for a simple fedora. This self-effacing demeanor reflects his priorities: using his artistry to uplift others rather than focusing on his own appearance. Ultimately, Abergel’s journey illustrates the fusion of talent, empathy, and creativity, making his work a conduit for confidence and self-expression for those he styles. His story is a reminder of the importance of individuality in a world increasingly marked by conformity, and his passion for making people feel seen and celebrated continues to drive him forward.
