Why The “Winona” Is The Ideal Haircut For Your Autumn Reinvention

Embracing Change This Autumn

While many people herald the new year as an opportunity for transformation, I believe autumn is the perfect season for a refresh. With its invigorating back-to-school vibe and cooling temperatures, fall presents an ideal backdrop for a stylistic makeover. One of the simplest yet most effective ways to reinvent yourself as September rolls in is with a fresh haircut. This year, the trend that’s capturing attention is the "Winona" cut—not to be confused with Winona Ryder’s iconic pixie from the early ’90s, but rather her more evolved "bixie" style from the 1994 film Reality Bites. Characterized by its sweeping side part and approachable androgyny, the Winona cut strikes the perfect balance between effortless and versatile.

The beauty of the Winona is in its adaptability; it lends itself to various styles based on your mood or the occasion. Stylists note that this haircut can be styled in many ways, whether you prefer it messy with a bit of volume or sleek and polished. Actress Katherine Langford, known for her role in 13 Reasons Why, recently embraced this versatile style. Her hairstylist, Halley Brisker, highlights that this particular length is ideal—it offers a trifecta of styling options, allowing it to function effectively as a pixie, crop, or a chic bob. When a hairstyle offers so many choices, it’s easy to see its appeal for those seeking something fresh yet low maintenance.

Celebrity hairstylist Charley McEwen, who has worked with A-listers like Alexander Skarsgård and Lily Allen, has observed a significant rise in requests for the bixie style. This resurgence can be attributed to the nostalgic allure it holds; it evokes a sense of late ’90s elegance that feels both timeless and chic without appearing excessively trendy. According to McEwen, the style seamlessly channels a nostalgic vibe, making it a go-to for autumn, a season known for its rich history and classic aesthetics.

Adding to this conversation, Sam McKnight—an esteemed hairstylist who has tended to the likes of Princess Diana and Kate Moss—has also recently showcased his rendition of the Winona. McKnight describes the haircut as “fresh and effortless,” emphasizing that it remains manageable during the growing-out phase. What makes the Winona particularly appealing is its relationship with “lived-in texture”; McKnight recalls Ryder’s hair in Reality Bites looking a bit disheveled, reminiscent of not having been washed for a couple of days. This grungy look is not only stylish but also easily achievable with the right products.

Speaking of products, McKnight recommends a combination of techniques to achieve that perfect textured look. For those with thicker textures, he suggests mixing a matte clay called Perfect Mess with a cream pomade named Dressed to Kill. This combo results in both definition and texture. For people with finer hair, a volumizing spray like Cool Girl Superlift can deliver volume without overwhelming the hair. These products help capture the desired look without the fuss—perfect for the busy autumn days ahead.

As more people embrace the Winona haircut, the excitement surrounding it only continues to grow. This autumn, whether you opt for a dramatic change or a subtle adjustment, remember that the season encourages not just a stylistic revival but also a mental refresh. With the right haircut and products, you can embody the carefree spirit of the changing seasons and express yourself confidently as you step into the fall.
