In her latest piece for Allure, reporter Kirbie Johnson takes readers behind the scenes of the highly anticipated film adaptation of “Wuthering Heights,” where she interviews hair and makeup designer Siân Miller. The new version of Emily Brontë’s classic novel, directed by Emerald Fennell and starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi, promises a fresh perspective that reinterprets the original themes of love, revenge, and social class. Miller emphasizes that this isn’t a straightforward adaptation; instead, it’s presented through the whimsical lens of a 14-year-old girl’s imagination, setting the stage for a visual feast that deviates from the expected.

Emerald Fennell’s vision for “Wuthering Heights” challenges traditional portrayals, and she herself acknowledges that this isn’t merely a retelling of the book. The director’s intent to capture an idealized, dream-like version of the story is evident both in the narrative and in the visual components, like the film’s title featuring quotation marks. This adds a layer of complexity, suggesting that viewers should prepare for a transformative experience that transcends the original material, focusing on interpretations that might not have unfolded on the page.

Miller’s work intricately weaves historical references and modern influences to create unique hairstyles and makeup looks. With as many as 40 hairstyles crafted for Margot Robbie’s character Cathy, including remarkable hairpieces adorned with vintage Chanel jewelry and references drawn from early 2000s styles, the film promises to be a playground for beauty lovers. Beyond aesthetics, Miller’s historical research led to the recreation of a unique nail art style originally made from eggshells and beetle blood, reflecting a commitment to authenticity while ensuring no creatures were harmed in the process.

The film’s visual narrative features an eclectic mix of inspirations, with makeup artists drawing from a kaleidoscope of sources. The stunning montage of makeup looks, showcasing elements like silver leaf and dark, black lips, is a testament to collaboration within the team. Influences from renowned makeup artist Pat McGrath’s past work with iconic designers such as John Galliano and Alexander McQueen resonate throughout this fantasy world, merging high fashion with the haunting beauty of the story.

Miller describes the overall aesthetic as a blend of mid-century melodrama with Victorian excess, enhanced by a fantastical vibe that brings a fresh perspective to the classic romance. Her collaboration with production designer Suzie Davies and costume designer Jacqueline Durran allows for a seamless integration of visuals that breathe life into this imaginative rendition of “Wuthering Heights.” Together, they create a visual language that captivates viewers, inviting them into a world where lush beauty takes center stage.

As fans look forward to the film’s release on February 13, audiences can expect to be dazzled by elaborate hair and makeup, as well as vibrant visuals that challenge the boundaries of time and tradition. This new interpretation of “Wuthering Heights” promises not just a narrative experience but a richly textured visual spectacle, setting the tone for a new era of storytelling that inspires viewers to think beyond the page. Prepare your theater-going outfits; this film is sure to leave a lasting impression.
