I Swear By The Vintage Blow Dry – Here’s How To Do it

My grandmother’s bob is a symbol of timeless elegance and unwavering resilience. If I had to encapsulate its essence in one word, it would undoubtedly be “imperturbable.” This stylish do, cut a little below her ears and boasting curly ends with a shimmering silver hue, mirrored the glamour of icons like Jackie Kennedy. Despite the daily chaos of life—or the changing weather—her hair remained impeccable, bouncy from dawn to dusk. The secret? Minimal effort. Every night before bed, she would effortlessly roll her hair in small rollers, transforming her locks into a flawless bob by morning, all done in the dark with an uncanny dexterity.

Intrigued by her beauty routine, I felt a strong urge to adopt a more vintage approach to my own hair, seeking a smoother morning process that steered clear of the frenetic, often bewildering tips popularized on platforms like TikTok. The first time I undertook my grandma’s hair method, I adhered religiously to her technique: a double-shampoo wash followed by a vigorous blow-dry with a round brush and the traditional roller set. However, I quickly learned that sleeping while wrapped in rollers was anything but comfortable. The next morning, in a quest for some semblance of a good night’s sleep, I found myself grappling with half-pulled-out curls and pangs of discomfort that made me question my commitment.

In search of a more practical solution, I started making adjustments. I swapped the rollers for barrel curls and replaced the heavy blow-dry with a curling tong. This modification proved to be a game-changer, yielding longer-lasting, bouncier waves akin to the iconic looks of Cindy Crawford, all while allowing me to enjoy a more restful night. It was refreshing to discover that simplicity could bring exquisite results, making me feel beautiful without sacrificing comfort.

To master this new curling technique, I relied on a wide-barrel curling tong, specifically the GHD Chronos Curve Grand Tong with its 32mm barrel. This tool allowed me to create loose, effortlessly chic curls reminiscent of a professional blow-out. The process entailed curling small sections of hair, wrapping them into barrel curls, and securing them with flat clips. Each twist was not merely about achieving a hairstyle; it was reminiscent of my grandmother’s graceful movements, imparting a sense of nostalgia to the routine.

Once my entire head was styled, I’d wrap it in a satin or silk scarf, preserving the curls while I drifted off to sleep. By morning, I was met with a beautifully set hairstyle that required only a light spritz of hairspray to keep it voluminous and bounce-resistant. This simple, yet effective method allowed me to embrace a vintage flair while also adapting it for modern-day convenience.

In essence, barrel curls are an agile, user-friendly technique that invites creativity without overwhelming complexity. Unlike traditional rollers, this method relies merely on flat clips and your own fingers, providing flexibility in terms of styling. The beauty lies in the ability to cater the curls to your desired shape, whether wrapping hair from the roots to the tips or vice versa. By incorporating this technique post-curling or after a classic blowout, I discovered an effortless way to ensure my locks remained voluminous and resilient throughout the day. Embracing this fusion of old and new not only honors my grandmother’s legacy but also simplifies my life, making beauty routines feel less like chores and more like a cherished ritual.
